Sustainability Science (Sahle et al., 2025; Takeuchi et al., 2017) has emerged as a transdisciplinary field devoted to understanding the dynamic interplay between natural and social systems in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within this framework, the psychology of sustainability and sustainable development (Di Fabio, 2017b; Di Fabio & Cooper, 2023; Di Fabio & Peiró, 2018, 2023; Di Fabio & Rosen, 2018, 2020; Hartung & Di Fabio, 2024) offers psychological lens for contributing to these challenges.
Sustainable development as the fourth paradigm for 21st century careers (Hartung & Di Fabio, 2024) expands traditional career models by incorporating attention to life on Earth and future generations. It promotes careers that respect principles of inclusiveness, considering personal well-being and well-being of others and the planet anchored to spatial as well as temporal dimensions.
The symposium presents five contributions aligned with this perspective. Maree integrates career construction counselling and BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT) enhancing adaptability for meaningful career-life trajectories. De Rosa, Akkermans, Khapova, and Lo Presti answer recent calls by the fourth paradigm exploring how project managers perceive the impact of career shocks on sustainability. De Carlo and La Barbiera propose, through a systematic review, an integrated model combining training, support, and prevention to enhance healthcare workers' safety and psychological well-being for sustainable careers. Giorgi in the framework of the psychology of sustainability and sustainable development examines digital connectivity and smart working as dual forces that can both support and challenge well-being, highlighting the importance of framing digital work as a sustainable practice. Finally, Palazzeschi offers a systematic review on career adaptability and well-being, presenting insights for research and intervention aligned with the fourth paradigm.
As discussant, Hartung will offer remarks on the value of this symposium and on the contributions of the five presentations.
