Introduction: Workplace violence (WPV), a widespread phenomenon which is particularly visible in the context of healthcare work, represents a significant occupational hazard and is a widespread issue globally. WPV is linked to decreased job satisfaction, commitment, and efficiency among healthcare workers, leading to a poorer quality of life. WPW is also an issue related to the sustainability of work, as it represents a threat to the workers' safety and dignity.
Purpose: Identifying and evaluating effective strategies for the prevention and intervention against workplace violence, therefore, is a crucial activity for allowing organization to implement sustainable practices and improve the quality of life and work for their people.
Method: In order to start an empirical research project aimed at testing effective strategies, a systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to systematize results on this topic. A comprehensive literature search was performed using the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Studies were screened and selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria using the PICOS framework. Out of 442 initially identified studies, eight met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review.
Results: The findings indicate that training programs incorporating simulations and behavioral economics principles significantly improve workers' ability to manage aggression. The use of validated assessment tools to identify risks of violence and the implementation of effective organizational policies have proven essential in reducing the incidence of aggression, thus enhancing the safety and capability of workers.
Conclusions: Adopting an integrated approach that combines advanced training, organizational support, and preventive policies is crucial for promoting a safe work environment and ensuring the well-being of healthcare workers and sustainable careers. This approach is aligned with the Psychology of Sustainability and Sustainable Development framework, fostering both safety and long-term well-being in organizations.
