Thursday 23 July 08:15 - 09:45
Hall: 13 - Room 10 SA

Chair and Presenter: Ligorio Maria Beatrice

Division: Division 5: Education and School Psychology

With this symposium we want to look at school in an innovative way; not exclusively as a learning
place but as an emotional system. Learning, indeed, is not just a cognitive act but implies feelings
and ways to cope with them. The set of papers composing the symposium is considering different
perspectives. First of all, the contributions come from four different countries: Italy, Spain,
Switzerland, and Türkiye. These are countries that share some similarities - being in the same
continent - but also many differences. This makes us caution in drawing generalization but it
helps us in increasing our capacity to discuss the results also from a cultural point of view.
Secondly, both students' (four papers) and teachers' perspective (Paper 5) has been considered.
Students are recruited from high school (Paper 1), adult and professional training (Paper 4), and
university (Paper 2 and 3).
Attention is also devoted to the role technology can play in terms of emotions. This is due not only
to the centrality technology gained lately but also to its impact on educational contexts. Theattempt is to understand how technology interrelates with students' study strategies (Paper 2), how
can be used to foster positive attitude toward sustainability (Paper 3) and how to create effective
digital environments where to train professionals (Paper 4).
Different methods are adopted across the papers: from standardized questionnaires (Paper 1, 2,
and 3), to focus group discussions (Paper 3, 4, and 5), and self-report (Paper 3 and 5). This is
because all the authors involved believe that a multi-method approach in the educational field can
offer an in-depth understanding of the phenomena studied. We trust that as a whole this
symposium can offer useful inputs so to consider schools as cultural institutions able to take care
also of the emotional side of theirparticipants.
