Interest in the Dark Triad/Tetrad has grown immensely in personality psychology and the public sphere, as evidenced from relatively frequent mentions in the news media and popular tv shows. The papers presented here describe new research on these 'negative' personality traits of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy and consider their characteristics and manifestations on a continuum. Focusing on the 'good', the papers will discuss the adaptiveness and positive attributes of varying levels of dark personality traits, while the 'ugly/bad' side examines the negative side of these personality traits. We believe prioritizing these areas may contribute to finding ways to structure environments to maximize positive outcomes associated with higher-than-average dark traits but also minimize potential socially undesirable outcomes. We also discuss areas of importance in which research, theory building and measurement on the Dark Triad are needed and must be improved upon become more practically useful.
