Traditional, unidimensional portrayals of Machiavellians as chiefly antagonistic and impulsive are flawed. Recent advances in structural theories and assessment instead depict Machiavellians in a more resourceful, multidimensional way. Explicitly, as planful and agentic alongside antagonistic, encompassing cynical views of humanity with a willingness to use tactics to achieve goals. However, due to previous issues with measurement few research studies have examined how multifaceted depictions of Machiavellianism associate with psychological resources. Hence, this paper firstly explored if the combination of Machiavellianism and psychological resources (non-cognitive skills of resilience, mental toughness, self-efficacy, and emotional intelligence) yielded meaningful profiles using a person-centred approach (latent profile analysis, LPA). Secondly, a comparison of emergent profiles occurred in relation to outcomes of stress, time pressure, and workplace functioning. A sample of 513 working adults (215 men, 298 women) completed standardised measures indexing the study constructs. The optimal LPA solution comprised three profiles: 'Resourceful, antagonistic and tactical' (23.1%), 'Resourceful and goal-oriented' (29.5%), and 'Antagonistic and cynical, less resourceful' (47.4%). Multivariate analysis of variance indicated that the 'Resourceful and goal-oriented' group possessed significantly lower stress, feelings of time pressure, perceived occupational demands, and were less likely to behave in deceptive ways in the workplace. However, the 'Resourceful, antagonistic and tactical' group were significantly more likely to behave in deceptive ways in the workplace. The 'Antagonistic and cynical, less resourceful' group exhibited the highest stress and time pressure alongside the greatest perceived occupational demands. Identification of the homogeneous profiles provided a nuanced understanding of the relative contribution of multidimensional Machiavellianism and non-cognitive skills to differences in mental health and workplace functioning. Specifically, that certain Machiavellianism qualities align with greater resources and more positive mental health / workplace outcomes. Future research should use similar approaches to examine other multidimensional Dark Triad constructs (i.e., narcissism and psychopathy).
