Chair and Discussant: Childress-Beatty Lindsay

Division: Division 10: Psychology, Law, and Ethics

The American Psychological Association (APA) is revising its 2002 Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (Ethics Code or Code) to be a transformational new Code that guides psychologists into the future. This symposium will provide a comprehensive overview of the draft Code from a global perspective. Presenters will highlight the new draft Code's expanded scope that more accurately reflects the wide variety of work activities and settings in which psychologists are engaged as well as the resulting necessity for mental health professionals to develop new competencies. The dynamic nature of ethics and emerging ethical issues such as those related to technology (e.g., artificial intelligence, telepsychology, big data), competencies, confidentiality, testing, and informed consent, as well as human rights. Presenters include several ethics experts involved in the drafting of the new Code as well as international ethicists with expertise regarding ethical principles and the Universal Declaration of Ethical Principles for Psychologists (UDEP). All will bring their unique national, as well as global, perspectives. By engaging in a critical examination of the ethical principles under revision in the new draft, the tension between the national characteristics of Ethics Codes and global ethical connections will be illuminated. Congress attendees will be able to reflect on their own national ethics codes, the current pressing issues in ethics globally, and the commonalities with the UDEP and the APA Ethics Code.
