Psychology as a science and as a profession works in the service of humanity. Psychologists are therefore directly involved in promoting the well-being and self-determination of individuals and their communities (beneficence), promoting social justice, respecting persons and peoples (fairness), advocating for human and civil rights, preventing harm (non-maleficence), and developing a scientific mindedness. The APA Code of Ethics is a source of inspiration, guidance and information for many countries in Europe and Italy in particular. The APA Code of Ethics is currently being revised, and a second new draft is in preparation, which is expected to be made available to the public in 2026. In a society that is constantly changing and challenged by numerous individual, social, cultural and technological problems, mental health and interpersonal relationships are exposed to various forms of stress. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that psychologists act not only competently but also with integrity and responsibility in their daily practice and understand the ethical implications of their professional behaviour. The APA Code of Ethics is designed to ensure that these goals are not only achieved but also strengthened. Because of the complexity of the APA Code of Ethics, the focus here is on a critical examination of some of the ethical principles under revision, such as fostering personhood, acting from social justice, encouraging participation, and supporting scientific research, but also examining the ethical use of AI, which are crucial for making psychology a profession that builds ethical bridges between America and Italy and with the rest of the world.
