Countries around the world are facing various challenges that impact society (WHO, 2020). The world is exposed to health challenges, such as health pandemics like COVID-19 and mental health pandemics, such as depression. In addition, for years, violent activities such as terrorism have caused environmental, health, and mental health problems for thousands of affected people. Furthermore, we are exposed to climate change, and people around the world are suffering the consequences of floods, droughts, and other weather conditions. In this symposium contributions of psychology to the biggest challenges worldwide will be discussed. Dr. María Paz García-Vera will examine the results of a national psychological care program in Spain for people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and lessons that can be learned for future pandemics and disasters. For his part, Dr. Jonhrev Guilaran will explore the role of social and community support in the promotion of positive psychological outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Jesús Sanz will speak about depression as a global challenge for mental health and the problems facing its adequate prevention and treatment. Terrorism remains one of the most serious global issues, affecting a significant number of individuals. Even during the same year as the pandemic, and despite the restrictions imposed by COVID-19, terrorist attacks continued. Dr. Rocío Fausor will focus on the contributions of psychology in the field of terrorism. Last, but not least, Dr. Daniel Dodgen will focus on how climate change is impacting in terms of individual and community mental health and social impacts and also how these effects differ across people and nations.
