Abstract text:
Terrorism remains one of the biggest challenges for societies and states across the globe. 156,025 incident fatalities took place since 2018 around the world (counter terrorism report, 2024). This phenomenon has been widely studied from a psychological perspective, with hundreds of scientific papers currently available on the topic. No study to date has gathered the qualitative experiences accumulated by those experts who have led the study of terrorism. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to: (1) gain insights from international experts on terrorism regarding their experiences and perspectives for the future through a qualitative approach and (2) provide a scoping review of the most relevant scientific literature recommended by these experts in the areas of terrorism. To this end, 740 international expert psychologists were contacted, 76 of whom completed an online survey and provided more than 100 bibliographic references to articles considered especially relevant in this field. Most relevant contributions will be discussed as so future lines of research and policy recommendations will be proposed.
