Friday 24 July 14:05 - 15:35
Hall: 03 - Volta

Chair and Presenter: Pais Leonor

Co-Chair: Dos Santos Nuno Rebelo

Division: Division 1: Work and Organizational Psychology

Decent work has become a conceptual anchor to work, organizational, and personnel psychology as long as the
current times challenge traditional workplace settings, job characteristics, and employment relationships. Since the
International Labour Organization mission was established for the first time in 1919, the work landscape has changed
hugely. Considering the permanent novelties that emerge worldwide in the labor field, although the concept was
created in response to safety emergencies exacerbated during the I and II World Wars, it maintains its relevance or
even becomes more relevant due to the multi-emergencies we live in. This symposium describes and discusses some
of the major emergencies that challenge and reinforce the importance of discussions around decent work concept in
the labor field. We also intend to bring some practical implications in terms of policy design and practices related to
the topics under discussion. First, we start with the self-employment issue. The fast-changing business context has
made organizations fear financial sustainability. Porto and Zagheto present the decent work discussions around this
problem. Then, we move to the turbulence around artificial intelligence and its implications for the world of work.
Rebelo et al. discuss the problem specifically in the field of academia but also present some implications for the work
in general. After this, Berger et al. bring to light the outbreaking technology that made it possible to work remotely
and the implications of this to the decent work concept. After that discussion, Matos et al. report the impact of decent
work on interventions aimed at leadership development.
