This symposium will describe the contributions of applied psychology to the science of sustainability. Sustainability is the focus of scientific attention in this 21st century since we came to understand that unless we take action the world as we know it will cease to exist. We are already experiencing environmental devastation and the recognition of our situation led to the need to preserve what we now have and to the science of sustainability.
The symposium will consist of four presentations by applied scientists and a discussion.
The first presentation will describe sustainability among indigenous people and how it became part of the culture of the community and enhanced the dignity of the individual. She offers lessons for our future from indigenous cultures where the informal economy among artisanal workers has been sustained for centuries and contributes to the sense of wellbeing among them.
The second presentation describes how applied psychology collaborated with other sciences to develop the science of sustainability and sustainable development .They describe their research on the psychological dimensions and behavioral requirements in decision making related to environmental, economic and equity factors as they are related to sustainable development
The third presentation discusses the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals and calls for the linkage of two of the Goals,8 and 13.Goal eight refers to decent work and economic growth and 13 to the environment. The authors point out that you cannot have one without the other. They show that it is possible to develop an economy of decent work and a clean environment by describing the city of Katowici,Poland that went from the sixth most polluted city in Europe to a. clean air city and a great economy. You can have both decent work and a clean environment. The fourthpresentationdescribestheresearchondevelopingthecompetenciesneededfor sustainabilityandmakingitapartoftheculture. They describe the validation of the Climate KIC Professional Competency Framework for System Innovation. This instrumentrevealed heneededcompetenciesofacceleratingtransitionspromotinginnovationanddrivingentrepreneurshipalongwiththesubcompetenciesundereach.
