Integrating Affective Events Theory, we examined (a) the mediating effect of online work complaint on the relationship between abusive supervision and organisational attractiveness, (b) the mediating effect of online work complaint on the relationship between positive workplace gossip and organisational attractiveness and (c) the moderating effects of opinion-oriented anonymous comments on the relationship between online work complaint and organisational attractiveness. We conducted a pre-test with 105 employees to validate all our survey items and check the consistency of the back-translation items. We then conducted a three-wave study with a two-week gap. In our three-wave study, we collected data from 401 employees across various industries in Taiwan. Our results revealed that (a) online work complaint mediates significantly the relationship between abusive supervision and organisational attractiveness, but (b) online work complaint did not mediate significantly the relationship between positive workplace gossip and organisational attractiveness. In addition, our results revealed that opinion-oriented anonymous comments did not show any significant moderating effect on the relationship between online work complaint and organisational attractiveness. Importantly, our results drew several important theoretical and managerial implications on online work complaints between (a) abusive supervision and organisational attractiveness, and (b) positive workplace gossip and organisational attractiveness. In the workplace context, online work complaints can help mitigate the worsening effect of abusive supervision on organisational effectiveness, but not positive workplace gossip. Surprisingly, there is no moderating effect, which implies that opinion-oriented anonymous comments would not mitigate the adverse effect between online work complaints and organisational attractiveness. Our study suggested that organisations or managers should pay attention to online work complaints in the workplace, as specific online work complaints can be a catalyst for employees to express relief regarding specific work behaviours.
