Sustainability Science (Dincer & Rosen, 2013; Komiyama & Takeuchi, 2006; Rosen, 2009, 2017; Sahle et al., 2025; Takeuchi et al., 2017) calls for a strong transdisciplinary integration among humanities, natural and applied sciences, social sciences, contributing directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Applied Psychology plays a crucial role in sustainability and sustainable development and its impact grows even stronger when it is integrated with other disciplines, since this connection allows the design of solutions that are not only technically effective, but also psychologically acceptable (Peiró, 2025).
Within the transdisciplinary approach of Sustainability Science, the framework of the Psychology of Sustainability and Sustainable Development (PSSD) (Di Fabio, 2017b, 2021; Di Fabio & Cooper, 2023; Di Fabio & Peiró, 2018, 2023; Di Fabio & Rosen, 2018, 2020) contributes to the challenges of sustainability and sustainable development using psychological lenses.
The strong collaboration between the PSSD and engineering areas has been very promising in recent years (Rosen & Di Fabio, 2023). This Round Table contributes to underlining the value of this mutual collaboration including the following participants. José Maria Peiró will underline the contribution of Applied Psychology for sustainability and sustainable development, highlighting the importance of the link of applied psychology with other disciplines, considering the valuable collaborations with engineers. Roni Riter-Palmon will present results from studies on engineering students and practitioners. Patton Garriott will contribute focusing on engineering students and evidences emerged by his studies. Hang-Shim Lee will consider engineering students also centering on women. Giampaolo Manfrida will presents an example of concrete collaboration through an Horizon Project including Social Life Cycle Assessment as well as Social Acceptance Analysis. Giuseppe Carrus will delineate studies on sustainability underlining the value of the framework of the psychology of sustainability and sustainable development for the progress in this area.
