Career psychology retains a rich tradition of science and practice concerned with promoting work and well-being in human life. Long focused on work at the individual level, career psychology now broadens its scope to more intentionally emphasize macrolevel factors (e.g., economic conditions, social policies, technological advances, and global challenges) affecting human life-careers. In so doing, distinct lines of work in the careers field attend increasingly to promoting sustainable development programs and proccesses and assisting individuals to achieve career sustainability.
The contemporary integration of sustainable development for sustainability within career psychology: (a) reflects contemporary shifts toward sustainable career models and trajectories; (b) supports emerging theoretical and practical initiatives that emphasize decency, fairness, and ethical practices; and (c) aligns the field with current conceptual and empirical developments across vocational, organizational, and management psychology that seek to advance sustainable careers, work, and workplaces.
Positioning sustainable careers within the field not only affirms its longstanding focus on individual career development and vocational behavior but also extends its reach to broader socioecological systems. This expanded scope offers a framework for career science and intervention that contributes to human health and well-being, social and economic equality, access to quality education, the development of sustainable communities, and the promotion of decent work for all.
This symposium will consider sustainable development and sustainability in career psychology from a variety of perspectives. Presenters will highlight recent initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable development and career sustainability, examine key conceptual frameworks and practical strategies, and identify ongoing challenges and future directions for research, policy, and practice in this evolving domain.
