Vulnerable road users (VRUs) - including pedestrians, two-wheelers, child occupants, older adults, soft and micromobility
users, and professional riders - account for a significant proportion of road traffic injuries and fatalities
worldwide. These groups face distinct challenges and heightened risks in traffic environments, necessitating tailored
safety measures and policies. Addressing their needs is essential for the development of safer and more inclusive
mobility systems.
Innovative technologies, urban planning, and policy initiatives offer promising avenues for enhancing VRU safety.
Solutions such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) specifically designed for VRUs, infrastructure
enhancements like dedicated bike lanes, and educational campaigns targeting both VRUs and drivers can significantly
mitigate risks. Furthermore, a nuanced understanding of the behaviors, vulnerabilities, and mobility patterns of each
VRU group is crucial for designing effective, targeted interventions.
This session will critically examine key topics, including but not limited to:
• Pedestrian behavior and risk factors in urban environments • Safety challenges for two-wheelers and strategies for risk mitigation
• Ensuring child occupant safety through vehicle design and restraint systems
• Enhancing professional rider safety through training, technology, and policy measures
• The role of emerging technologies in addressing VRU challenges
This symposium directly aligns with the conference themes of "Emerging Fields" (through the application of novel
technologies and approaches to VRU safety), "Transdisciplinary Approaches" (by integrating insights from human
factors, engineering, and public health), and "Societal Applications" (through a focus on reducing harm and
promoting equitable safety for vulnerable groups).
The symposium will be of particular interest to researchers, policymakers, urban planners, and safety professionals. It
aims to foster discussion on innovative solutions, collaborative strategies, and best practices to protect VRUs and
ensure safe mobility for all.
