Thursday 23 July 09:50 - 11:20
Hall: 01 - Basilica

Chair: Neves Pedro

Discussant: Da Motta Veiga Serge

Division: Division 1: Work and Organizational Psychology

The study of leadership has always been at the core of organizational psychology. The influence of leaders in the regular functioning of organizations is undeniable. In this symposium, we gather a collection of four presentations that advance our knowledge by examining multiple aspects of the leadership process. We not only apply different theoretical lenses to interpret leadership behaviors, by examining specific facets such as inclusive leadership, implicit leadership theories, and leader ego depletion, but we also discuss leadership in practice by looking into the implementation of a leadership training program. Relying on social information processing theory, the first presentation (Andretta & Story) will focus on inclusive leadership and examine a trickle-up model that includes perceptions of leaders, supervisors, and followers. We will follow by exploring the link between implicit leadership theories and abusive supervision (Velez), namely by examining their combined effects on employee deviant behaviors. Our third presentation (Dimas, Meneses Junior & Coelho) draws on job demands-resources theory to investigate how and under what conditions leader ego depletion influences team effectiveness. Our fourth presentation (Foster) will introduce the structure and content of a program designed to develop leadership skills for UN supervisors. These contributions will be discussed by Professor Serge da Motta Veiga, Professor at NEOMA Business School and Editor of AP:IR, who will integrate these findings and emphasize the importance of narrowing the gap between research and practice in our understanding of leadership behaviors.
