Chair and Presenter: Lee Jiyoon

Division: Division 17: Professional Psychology

New York University (NYU) is a global university system with 13 global study-away sites and 3 global portal campuses (New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai, each staffed with a global counselor). International competency as a clinician is crucial in their work because our students come from all over the globe and almost all of NYU's students spend some of their education at a site other than their portal campus. Global counselors at NYU Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS) provide individual and group counseling, support students in transition and adjustment, assist students with their specific needs while studying away, and help students manage the transition back to their home campuses. Effective global counselors need to have a good understanding of the unique cultural contexts in which they are working and how these systems influence a specific individual or cultural group (Nilsson, Wang, & Chung, 2019).

The presenters, who are international psychologists, global counselors, and a campus nurse, working at varied locations in the NYU global system, will address questions about what working in global sites means for them in the field of psychology and professional practices by addressing 1) multicultural competencies to work with diverse students at NYU's New York campuses and Washington, DC site, 2) navigating students' complex dual identities and racial dynamics at NYU Abu Dhabi campus, 3) international students' identity development, resilience, and healing far from home at NYU Florence, and 4) integrated nursing care for international students as first line mental health gateway at NYU Florence. The presenters will discuss how adaptability, openness, tolerance of ambiguity, and motivation to learn allow them to serve students with diverse cultural and international backgrounds in their global campuses in an integrated care model to enhance their networking and collaboration with other professionals across borders in the global context.
