Abstract text:
Many Japanese local governments have conducted public opinion surveys on gender equality. However, these data have not been analyzed sufficiently. This study examined whether Japanese people's thoughts on gender equality differ depending on their current situation to promote diversity more effectively. Data were drawn from respondents to a public opinion survey on gender equality (N = 1,296) conducted in a suburban city near Tokyo between June and July 2023. First, multiple correspondence analyses (MCAs) were conducted separately by participants' gender, focusing on responses regarding current gender role situations and perceptions of gender equality. MCA results were plotted two-dimensionally to illustrate relationships between items. Second, hierarchical cluster analysis using Ward's method classified respondents by gender into five groups based on the two-dimensional coordinates. Third, the study tested for differences in attitudes toward gender equality and experiences of harassment among these groups. Finally, the findings were used to discuss strategies for promoting gender equality effectively and addressing obstacles that hinder progress.
