Abstract text:
It has been widely acknowledged in environmental psychology that nature exposure is beneficial to humans' wellbeing, including attention and stress restoration, improved cognitive performance, increased positive affect and reduced negative affect. Based on limited studies, nature sounds were found to have similar effects. However, nature sounds were usually used as an intervention during a restoration phase; in reality, one could be immersed in nature sounds during task performance and as one goes about their daily activities. In other words, nature sounds can be played as background "music". Referring to the literature of background music and given the accessibility of nature sounds (e.g., on platforms like YouTube), we explored how adult office workers utilized nature sounds and other background music and sounds in daily life by conducting a survey study and screening the comments section of some of the most popular nature sounds videos on YouTube. This study analyzed the qualitative and quantitative responses from both data sources. Results revealed diverse habits and practical uses of nature sounds. Future research directions and practical implications were discussed.
