It has been consistently documented in literature that mental health treatment for involuntary sex offenders is challenging work. Unfortunately, comprehensive research examining treatment process factors for this unique population in Asian countries remains extremely rare. With 20+ years of experiences serving as the supervisor and mental health provider designated by a county's health department in Taiwan, the presenter analyzed treatment process data from six involuntary sex offenders (all men), aged between 32 and 45 years old, after they successfully completed the required 2-year counseling program. None of these offenders reoffended within three years following the conclusion of the treatment.
The analysis of the data revealed several critical factors contributing to the effectiveness of the treatment. First, close collaboration by multiple networks of agencies plays a key role. For instance, several governmental branches (e.g., health, police, and social departments) and community organizations shared information about clients' needs/situations to provide timely supervision and home visits when early warning signs were noticed. Second, psychoeducational programs were repeatedly recognized by clients as helpful components of the program in teaching them legal knowledge, strengthening their understanding of the rationale of abiding the law, and increasing their awareness of the negative consequences associated with recidivism. Third, the implementation of relational, cognitive, behavioral, and emotion-focused interventions also contributed to effective outcomes. The counseling process focused on challenging their distorted beliefs about sexually offending others, helping clients recognize their negative emotions and establish more effective coping skills to reduce extreme negative emotions and avoid reacting to their emotions with sexual behavior, enhancing clients' abilities to release their sexual impulses appropriately, and improving their problem-solving abilities, including seeking help when needed.
In this section, the presenter will share examples of challenges, considerations, and specific interventions for working with this population. Discussion will highlight culturally sensitive treatments with multidisciplinary collaborations.
