Abstract text:
With climate change becoming a social and cultural issue, people have shown interest in changing lifestyle and consumption patterns that are pro-environment. This is evident in the growing emphasis on sustainability in customers' agenda as witnessed in an increased demand for organic and eco- friendly products. Understanding the psychological drivers of responsible consumer behaviour is critical particularly in emerging economies like India owing to its enormous population and rising per capita emissions. Building on the framework of theory of planned behaviour and value belief norm theory, the study aims to examine the multi dimensionality of the construct environmentally conscious consumer behaviour (ECCB) and explore gender differences for its several dimension. Additionally, ECCB and its relationship Viz. Environmental awareness, Biospheric values, Connectedness to nature, Intentions and Mindfulness will be investigated to explore factors like cognitions, emotional bonding, and values that are central to Indian culture and tradition that foster environmentally responsible consumption. A sample of 350 working individuals will be selected randomly from urban and semi-urban cities of Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali in India. Correlation analysis, multiple regression and mediation analysis using SEM modelling will be employed to study the relationships among the variables. The direct and indirect pathways to environmentally conscious consumer behaviour (ECCB) will also be explored through the two mediators, Intentions and Mindfulness. The study seeks to provide nuanced understanding of ethical consumerism shaped by cultural values, education, gender in Indian context.
