Abstract text:
Mindfulness has been reported in some researches to be influenced by physical activity and
smartphone usage. To further explore the pattern and extent of the relationship between
smartphone usage, physical activity and mindfulness among students. The present study employed
112 university students aged 18-25 years. Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) was used
to assess trait mindfulness (Brown & Ryan, 2003); Smartphone Use Scale assessed smartphone
usage (SUS; Mukherjee & Dasgupta, 2020) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire -
Short Form (Craig et al., 2003) assessed self-reported physical activity. Correlation analysis was
performed to determine the strength and direction of associations between the variables. Findings
revealed that statistically significant negative correlation existed between smartphone usage and
mindfulness (r = -0.495, p = 0.001), indicating that higher smartphone usage was linked with lower
mindfulness. However, relationship between smartphone usage and physical activity was found to
be non-significant (r = -0.131, p = 0.324), suggesting that smartphone usage was not associated
with physical activity levels of the participants. Further, no significant correlation was reported
between mindfulness and physical activity (r = -0.006, p = 0.968). The current study found an
association between smartphone usage and mindfulness but no significant relationship existed with
physical activity. However, this study was done on a relatively small sample and used only self
reported measures, future researches may include larger sample sets from diverse population and
empirical/qualitative data would provide better insights about smartphone usage, physical activity
and mindfulness.
