School-based suicide prevention programs exist in the Philippines, however, community-level interventions remain limited, despite local responders often being the first to encounter persons in psychological distress. In response, the Living in a Facilitative Environment (LIFE) Program was developed by the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) through its Community Development and Engagement Committee (COMDEV). LIFE is a community-based suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention initiative designed to extend mental health support beyond formal institutions and into grassroots settings where resources are often scarce. The program equips barangay health workers, rural health unit staff, and other community responders with simple, compassionate, and practical guidance to recognize suicide risk, provide initial support, and establish functional referral pathways. LIFE follows a developmental-evaluative design with six phases: (1) module development; (2) pilot implementation; (3) evaluation; (4) refinement; (5) validation and re-evaluation; and (6) acceptance and rollout. Module development began in 2023 and was piloted in the three major island regions of the Philippines—Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao— in the subsequent years. Fifty-four participants, aged 19 to 70, were randomly selected from all pilot runs nationwide for the evaluation phase, representing all community stakeholders. Preliminary evaluation results suggest that LIFE is relevant, applicable, and confidence-building, enhancing participants' ability to respond effectively to suicide risks within their communities. Insights from this evaluation are now guiding the refinement of LIFE modules and the development of guidebooks for both implementers and beneficiaries, ensuring that the final program remains practical, life-centered, and culturally responsive. The LIFE program illustrates how community-based life education can advance well-being by fostering early response, resilience, and collaborative engagement in suicide prevention. By bridging the gap between formal services and grassroots realities, LIFE presents depth and a scalable, life-affirming model for resource-limited settings seeking to protect life and sustain community mental health.
