Excessive smartphone usage has been a cause of concern lately. It is linked with adverse health effects and cognitive impairments. In this view, the present study investigated the effect of smartphone usage on mind wandering with focus on moderating role of mindfulness. The sample consisted of 112 university students whose age ranged from 18 to 26 years. The responses of participants were obtained using Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (Brown & Ryan, 2003), Mind-Wandering Questionnaire (Mrazek et al., 2013) and Smartphone Use Scale (Mukherjee & Dasgupta, 2020). Finally obtained data (of 100 participants) was subjected to regression and moderation analyses that indicated significant positive association between smartphone usage and mind wandering and moderating role of mindfulness. The findings revealed that higher smartphone use was associated with increased occurrences of mind wandering and students with elevated mindfulness reported higher linkage between mind wandering and smartphone usage. These results showed that individuals high in mindfulness have either enhanced awareness or higher sensitivity to attentional disruptions caused by smartphone engagement. The results of this study suggested that intervention programs for smartphone addiction should focus on the mindfulness perspective to curb excessive usage of smartphone. In future, empirical researches may be conducted to further explore the smartphone addiction in the mindfulness aspect.
