Introduction: Performing under pressure is one of the defining challenges of sport. While stress and anxiety have been extensively studied, less is known about the motivational mechanisms that explain why some athletes thrive while others falter. Regulatory Focus Theory distinguishes between promotion focus (growth and achievement) and prevention focus (safety and error avoidance). Regulatory Fit Theory further suggests that performance improves when athletes' motivational orientation matches the way tasks are framed.
Objective: This narrative review synthesises existing evidence on regulatory focus and regulatory fit in sport, highlighting their impact on individual performance, coaching practices, and team dynamics.
Methods: A structured search of APA Psycnet, PubMed, and Google Scholar up to April 2024 identified nineteen eligible publications. Studies were analysed using a narrative synthesis informed by SANRA quality criteria, with thematic clustering around athlete profiles, performance outcomes, coaching communication, and contextual moderators.
Results: Findings reveal consistent benefits of motivational fit: athletes perform with greater accuracy, decision-making efficiency, and emotional stability when orientation and task framing align. Promotion focus was typically observed in offensive roles and creative contexts, while prevention focus predominated in defensive positions and precision sports. Coaching communication emerged as a critical moderator, with aligned instructions amplifying engagement and performance. Contextual factors, including task difficulty, expertise level, anxiety, impostor tendencies, and social status, shaped whether fit effects were enhanced or diminished. Importantly, initial evidence suggests collective regulatory fit at the team level may foster cohesion and strategic responsiveness.
Conclusion: Regulatory focus and fit provide a powerful yet underexplored framework for understanding and enhancing sport performance. Practical applications include tailored coaching strategies, feedback adaptation, and motivationally aligned training design.
