In the recent past the cases of suicide among emerging adults in India have been a major concern. According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), India there have been persistently elevated rate of suicide among emerging adults over the years 2017-2022, with numbers remaining consistently high (7.6% in 2017, 8.2% in 2020, 8% in 2021, and 7.6% in 2022). As per the NCRB data various causes of adult suicide are professional/career problems, sense of isolation, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, addiction to alcohol, financial loss, chronic pain etc. Researchers also reported that mental pain, social challenges and need for love and belonging are some of the prominent reasons for adult suicide. Considering the recent increase in suicide cases among emerging adults in India, the present study was undertaken to explore the role of Parental Involvement, Social Support and Peer Experiences in suicide behaviour and ideation among emerging adults. A total of 50 emerging adults were administered measures of suicidal ideation and behaviour, parental involvement, social support and peer experiences. It was found that parental involvement, especially parent- teacher coordination is a major predictor of suicide ideation among emerging adults. Peer experience of suicide ideation/attempt was also found to be significantly associated with suicide behaviour among emerging adults. It was also observed that social support, especially family support is a factor that works as a protective factors against suicidal thoughts and actions. These findings are important as they indicate that providing parental support through sharing, giving support at times of difficulties and peer support are some of the important factors to consider while developing interventions to support young adults with suicidal tendencies and also in the reduction of factors in their day to day life that leads to suicide ideation/attempts.
