This presentation will discuss meaning in life through challenging yet rewarding work of facilitators of conversation groups for families of persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in Italy. Drawing from guided interviews with facilitators across three different regions in Italy, the research featured is a part of a larger project conducted in several European countries and Israel. The facilitators who work for non-profit organizations have elaborated on the ethical issues that they face, how they navigate ethical dilemmas, and how in spite of numerous challenges they found meaning in their work. The overarching themes in how participants understood meaning in life related to conceptualizing work as a calling, finding meaning in alleviation of suffering through their work, and building and finding a sense of community through their work. The presentation will highlight the relevance of findings to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the need for transdisciplinary approach in research and advocacy.
