Abstract text:
Wellbeing is a central concept in global mental health, reflected in the United Nations 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development and increasingly recognized as essential for informing
policy, programming, and clinical practice. Despite advances in wellbeing research, existing
assessment tools have been developed within Western contexts and do not adequately capture
culturally-specific understandings of human flourishing for Middle Eastern populations. This
presentation introduces the Al-Hayat Al-Tayiba Wellbeing Framework and the development
of the Al-Hayat Al-Tayiba Wellbeing Instrument (HTI), a culturally-grounded measure that
assesses holistic wellbeing within Middle Eastern contexts. Drawing on extensive scholarly
research conducted in Qatar, the framework conceptualizes wellbeing through five
interconnected pillars: Spiritual, Emotional, Intellectual, Physical, and Social Wellbeing.
Together, these dimensions provide a comprehensive model of human flourishing while
maintaining relevance across diverse cultural settings. Using a sample of 400 undergraduate
students from Qatar University, the study conducted extensive statistical analyses to establish
the reliability and validity of the instrument. Results provide strong initial evidence
supporting the HTI as a psychometrically sound and culturally-relevant measure of wellbeing.
These findings address an important gap in culturally rooted wellbeing assessment and
contribute to ongoing efforts to develop more inclusive approaches to measuring and
promoting wellbeing globally. Implications for research, clinical practice, and cross-cultural
applications will be discussed, along with directions for future studies in other cultural
contexts.
