Abstract text:
The postpartum period is a critical transition that deeply impacts couples' emotional and relational dynamics. While clinical interventions often focus on the individual experience of postpartum recovery, couples frequently face challenges in communication, intimacy, and identity renegotiation that are left unaddressed. This presentation explores culturally attuned approaches to supporting couples in the postpartum period, integrating systems-based therapeutic models with sensitivity to cultural expectations, gender roles, and intergenerational influences.

Drawing from Marriage and Family Therapy, attachment theory, and cross-cultural frameworks, this session will highlight common postpartum stressors—such as exhaustion, body image concerns, shifting roles, and intimacy disruptions—and how these are compounded or shaped by cultural norms.

Participants will be introduced to clinical strategies for enhancing communication, boundary-setting, and emotional reconnection through culturally sensitive and trauma-informed interventions.

This session is intended for clinicians, educators, and community professionals who work with diverse families navigating the postpartum experience. The goal is to promote relational health, resilience, and cultural humility in therapeutic practices that support couples in rebuilding intimacy and connection during a uniquely vulnerable life stage.
