Abstract text:
A successful air operation starts with the quality of the selected candidates for pilot training. Selection methods are therefore of essential importance: without rigorous and valid selection procedures, it is not possible to develop highly competent pilots.
Military pilot selection traditionally emphasizes cognitive competencies, such as spatial orientation, memory, and reaction time. However, as the demands of modern military operations evolve, interpersonal competencies—such as teamwork, communication, and emotional regulation—are gaining increased recognition as essential attributes for mission success. These competencies are typically assessed through structured interviews, behavioral exercises, and personality questionnaires.
This presentation provides an in-depth overview of the selection procedures used by the Royal Netherlands Air Force, with a specific focus on the psychological dimensions assessed during the interview phase.
