While climate change and its implications are a central concern for European
citizens, there is clearly a lack of public spaces where adaptation to climate
change is discussed. This presentation will consider findings from previous and
ongoing projects at the Norte Region in Portugal on the uses of school and
community-based participatory and deliberative strategies that foster the co
construction of knowledge about the challenges and risks resulting from climate
change and ways to address and combat them. The rationale is that only through
inclusive and democratic spaces of collective discussion and deliberation can
communities engage in sustainable efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate
change, confronting inequalities and injustice.
