Abstract text:
Time and again, we are reminded of the need to support gifted and talented youth. Articles, journals, and books all contribute to a persistent, enduring cautionary tale about the challenges these youth face. Today, they are needed more than ever. The once future problems our planet could face have arrived and the urgency to respond is immediate. Gifted and talented youth can play a pivotal role in shaping solutions to rising global concerns.
The challenges faced by gifted youth are nothing new. Their stories are often threatened by familiar pitfalls—pathologizing their giftedness, having their career paths hijacked, or becoming paralyzed by indecision. These barriers can negatively impact their personal and professional growth. Yet, there are interventions, like career construction counseling and tools such as My Career Story, that can assist gifted youth in navigating these challenges.
Rinn et al. (2022) highlight a gap in national policy, noting that responsibility for serving gifted youth in the U.S. largely falls on individual states and school districts. Lack of a unified approach means that gifted youth often face inconsistent support. The stakes have grown higher as issues once seen as global such as climate change, sustainability, and economic disparity have increasingly become realities on a more local level again and again. The future is no longer distant; it is already upon us. Our responses will shape not only the world's future but our own. Within each of us, and in our work with others, lies the power to influence the story of tomorrow including the individual stories of others. By supporting the career development of gifted and talented youth and addressing the systemic challenges they face, we can help them navigate their paths and make meaningful contributions to our world in need.
