Abstract text:
Happiness and wellbeing became buzz words over the past 25 years since "Positive
Psychology" was formulated. For a nascent field, it has made strides, with at least two
dedicated Q1 journals, post-baccalaureate degrees, and international conferences.
However, it can be hard to see how any of this wellbeing science has made the world a
better place. I proposed Regenerative Positive Psychology as a call to reorient this field
toward making a beneficial impact on the systems that sustain life and wellbeing. In this
talk, Regenerative Positive Psychology (RPP) is defined and Three Pillars of RPP are
provided to shape future multidisciplinary work. I will highlight the familiar and sad
trends of ecological health over the past 25 years, and point toward research showing
that caring for the environment could easily be integrated into more sophisticated,
regenerative models of wellbeing. Ultimately, the aim of RPP is to empower positive
psychology and wellbeing sciences to be parts of the solution for the most pressing
crises of our time, and at the top of the list are the intertwined climate crisis, pollution
crisis, plastics crisis, and biodiversity crisis. With collaboration across traditional
boundaries, we can move toward addressing these crises from multiple angles and
ideally popularize the reality that the wellbeing of the environment ultimately is the
happiness of its denizens.
