Abstract text:
Adults with ADHD often present a history of poor academic performance, work
problems, or strained relationships due to inattentiveness, hyperactivity or
impulsiveness. ADHD sufferers exhibit heightened sensitivity to both physical and
emotional stimuli which is likely to cause a sensory overload or an emotional
dysregulation in them.
Self-care practices can prevent the adverse effects of ADHD and foster a healthy
lifestyle. The main objective of this study is to explore the effective self-care practices
used by adult ADHD sufferers in Sri Lanka. The study followed the qualitative
approach and in-depth interviews for data collection. The study sample includes ten
individuals in the age range of 25 to 35 years with an ADHD diagnosis proof by a
consultant psychiatrist; selected using purposive sampling. Theoretical thematic analysis
was used for data analysis. The findings identified 28 self-care practices utilized by
adult ADHD sufferers in order to cope with daily stressors. The findings were classified
into seven self-care practice domains; namely, basic need satisfaction, mindfulness,
reframing negative thoughts, gratitude practice, establishing routines, physical fitness,
and recreational activities. Effective treatment often involves a combination of elements
such as medication, psychotherapy and self-care practices. The research findings
underline the importance of taking proactive measures to integrate self-care practices as
part of the medical interference for ADHD management in adult ADHD suffers.
