The study aimed to explore the psychosocial contributing factors that make people
vulnerable to developing depression and anxiety disorders in Bangladesh. A total of
130 participants were selected for the study. The qualitative case study research method
was used to collect and analyze the data. In-depth interview them was used to collect
data. There are a number of factors that contribute to develop depression and anxiety
disorders in Bangladesh, including individual factors, family related factors, situational
factors, and biological factors. Individual factors were categorized as cognitive factors,
emotional contributing factors, behavioral contributing factors and skill deficits etc.
Family related factors included parenting style and attitude toward their child, poor
relationship with parents, parental physical and mental health parental relationship,
family communication patterns etc. Situational factors like being confined in home,
exposure to articles opposite to values and beliefs, time waste, poverty and food
insecurity, pregnancy-related issues, private relationships (Romantic affaire other than
spouse/fiancé/boyfriend/girlfriend), lack of preparation for work life, nude picture
exposed to online was very unique in nature. These factors can be used in the prevention
and management of psychological disorders. This study accumulated limited
information about biological factors as a byproduct, which is also very important in
preventing and managing mental health problems.
