Abstract text:
Despite the legislative progress in terms of employment protection for LGBT+ people in
Spain, transgender people continue to face unequal treatment in access and during their
professional career paths compared to their cisgender counterparts. Less is known about
what is the role of sexual orientation in work experiences of transgender individuals. This
qualitative study focuses on exploring the intersection of gender identity and sexual
orientation in the career paths of transgender people in the Spanish workplace. The
participants were two transgender non binary, four trans women and seven trans men.
Regarding their sexual orientation, participants were seven bisexuals, two heterosexuals, two
homosexuals, one queer and one indeterminated sexuality. Through 13 semi-structured
interviews, three main themes were identified: (1) decision to make identity (in)visible, (2)
structural and interpersonal discrimination and its impact on the individual and (3) informal
and formal support and its influence on individual well-being at work. In the first main theme,
the interactive role of trans identity and sexual orientation was observed when managing
both identity dimensions, especially when it came to revealing two socially stigmatized
identities. Moving on to the second theme, the consequences of revealing trans identity and,
in some cases, a non-heterosexual identity, did not reveal unique forms of oppression
resulting from the intersection. In this regard, various forms of discrimination motivated by
trans identity were exposed. Finally, the third theme highlighthed the importance of the role of
organizational support in the visibility and well-being of trans people regardless of their
sexual orientation. This study underscores the need to implement organisational policies that
establish the starting point for the integration and creation of an inclusive organisational
culture for transgender employees.
