Artificial Intelligence (AI) has profoundly changed work contexts, conditions, and
content. Given this, assessing its impact on academic work is crucial and relevant to the
decent work concept and standards as defined by the International Labour Organization.
This study looks at the use of AI for teaching and research academic tasks. The study
had the following objectives: (1) To describe and characterize the current and
prospective AI systems used in academia; (2) To obtain insight into the opportunities
and risks of using AI in academia. To do this, 28 participants from three countries
(Portugal, The Netherlands, and The United States of America) were interviewed. The
interview questions focused on AI's impact on Ethical Principles and Decent Work
Dimensions, which means screening the impact on the work's content, conditions, and
context. The results allowed us to map AI usage in academia and in-depth insights from
participants. Qualitative content analysis was performed using Nvivo software. The
results structured the participants' responses in seven clusters and were interpreted in
light of the socio-technical systems framework.
