This presentation discusses aspects and trends in human resource management processes that promote decent work in organisations, and the organisational responsibility to do so. We structure our argument around the different facets of human resource management commonly outlined in the literature, to demonstrate how decisions at all stages of the HR process can impact an overarching experience of work as decent. Drawing on research about the importance of HR managers for shaping fair and decent working conditions, we highlight how HR managers are a key site of intervention to shape decent work. By raising awareness of the importance of decisions across the whole employee lifecycle, we demonstrate how much agency HR managers have over decent work. Furthermore, while the concept of decent work is often considered from a moral perspective, we will argue for the importance of HR managers making a business case for decent work within their organisations. In doing so not only will individual experiences of work be improved but so too will organisational effectiveness increase.
