Prevailing societal narratives may either align with or contradict those learned within specific cultural contexts. These narratives are communicated both explicitly and implicitly, shaping deeply held assumptions about the self, others, and the world. They influence how people perceive their roles in society, their relationships, and their opportunities. In career counselling, exploring the interplay between societal and cultural narratives provides a window into clients' worldviews and their values, beliefs, and emotions regarding education, career pathways, family and community roles, and notions of career success. Through an exploration and learning process, career counsellors can support clients to gain a better understanding about relevant social and cultural narratives.
A meaning-making process that encourages reflection and dialogue allows clients to critically examine the narratives influencing their career decisions and career development. Through this process, clients can revise existing narratives or construct new ones that are more relevant to their aspirations and challenges. Surfacing narratives through personal experiences fosters self-awareness and empowers clients to re-author their stories in ways that align with their evolving identities. While gaining new perspectives can be liberating, encountering conflicting narratives can also be unsettling. Clients may experience dissonance and resistance as they navigate the tensions between prior understandings and newly emerging insights.
This presentation highlights Culture-Infused Career Counselling and supporting clients to recognize, integrate, and reauthor the narratives that have influenced their careers. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of career counsellors engaging in reflective practice to examine the societal and cultural narratives that have shaped their own career development. Suggestions will be provided for incorporating ongoing self-reflection into case conceptualization and intervention planning, encouraging career counsellors to deepen understanding about personal assumptions, while guiding clients through career exploration and decision-making.
