The World Health Organanization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Campania in Naples, Italy has been involved in the development, testing, and dissemination of the ICD-11 CDDR from the beginning. Under the direction of Professor Mario Maj, the Department Chair and Centre Director, the translation of the CDDR into Italian has been a specific element of the Centre's work plan with WHO since 2017. In practice, this was something of a moving target given that revisions were made to the CDDR text up to the time of its publication in 2024, most recently as a part WHO's copy-editing process. For publication and dissemination, the Centre chose to work with Raffaello Cortina, Editore, a well-known Italian publisher for scientific and professional volumes, including in psychiatry and mental health. The Descrizioni Cliniche e Requisiti Diagnostici per i Disturbi Mentali, Comportamentali e del Neurosviluppo was published in September 2025 and was the first WHO-authorized non-English version to be published. This presentation will focus on: 1) some of the main issues that arose during the translation process and how they were resolved; 2) suggestions for organizations that may wish to undertake local translations, including professional societies, academic centres, and commercial publishers; and 3) various themes related to interacting with WHO, with the Italian government, and with the publisher.
