Background and Objectives:
Applied psychology can meaningfully address global challenges only by integrating three interconnected levels of analysis: macro (societal, political, and cultural systems), meso (organizational structures and practices), and micro (individual behaviors and experiences). Reclaiming this multi-level perspective is essential for psychology to contribute effectively to future development and human well-being.
Approach:
At the macro level, psychological science can inform labor market and social policy, particularly in aging societies where equitable participation in work is a pressing concern. At the meso level, psychology provides organizations with evidence-based tools to implement inclusive practices. The Later Life Workplace Index (LLWI) exemplifies this approach. The LLWI measures nine domains of age-inclusive organizational practices and is currently validated in over 30 countries through a global research consortium.
Findings and Collaboration:
At the micro level, psychological research links individual motivation, health, and work ability with organizational and societal conditions. Networks such as COST Action CA22120 - A European Network to Leverage the Multi-Age Workforce (LeverAge) enhance this integration by fostering interdisciplinary, cross-national collaboration to advance age-diverse and sustainable workforces.
Conclusions and Implications:
Together, these efforts illustrate psychology's capacity to bridge individual, organizational, and societal levels—contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Revitalizing psychology's applied, multi-level mission strengthens its global relevance and repositions it as a discipline capable of advancing equitable and sustainable societies.
