Abstract text:
Community organisations in South Africa play a critical role in driving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), yet their experiences and insights seem to be overlooked in current literature. SIOP-UN committee member, Dr Zonke Zungu, will share the findings of a research project that investigates the factors that shape employee health and well-being in community organisations. It will centre the role of community organisations, particularly in under-resourced community organisations, while foregrounding the challenges, gaps and recommendations for empowering employees on the margins. Overall, this presentation contends that advancing SDGs must be driven by human-centred principles, starting by caring for those on the frontlines of leading these goals, which will ultimately create a ripple effect. It will argue that community organisations are a microcosm of the larger society, shaping not only the well-being of employees, but also families, communities and the planet. Drawing from the findings and the multiple perspectives in the field of Work Psychology, this session will demonstrate how this field can serve as a tool for advancing the SDGs.
