Current welfare systems often fall short of meeting the complex needs of older adults, many of whom live with chronic and debilitating conditions. As a result, informal caregiving by family members and friends becomes essential. However, this role can be highly demanding and emotionally taxing, frequently leading to caregiver burnout and negatively impacting caregivers' own health and well-being. This presentation introduces a theoretical framework identifying key risk factors for caregiver burnout and discusses potential primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies to inform social and healthcare policies across European societies.
