The decay of neurocognitive functions in elderly may assume various forms and levels, differently susceptible to preventive interventions to be implemented in specific services.
Alzheimer syndrome, whose incidence in the population is increasing, with a consequent impact on the social health systems, is sometimes preceded by Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Biological, cognitive, emotional and behavioural aspects are involved in the possible conversion from MCI to dementia, as demonstrated by a wide literature.
Multidimensional interventions integrating neurobiological and cognitive strategies (e.g., memory and imagery training, social interaction) for people at risk for dementia can be a successful answer for active ageing.
The aim of our research is to implement services for both the prevention and the intervention, useful to foster "well aging societies", using also procedures and devices based on technologies and Artificial Intelligence.
Prevention regards the early identification of psychological and social age-related risks of frailty and mental and/or social decline. The impact of psychological risk or protective factors on aging trajectories towards frailty are studied: e.g., the role of cognitive reserve, psychological resilience, emotional regulation, and personality traits on neurocognitive, physical, and functional performance in the "frail" elderly through multidisciplinary assessment and intervention.
Prevention strategies for better health and wellness, to promote active living in aging are the premises for designing and validating interventions aimed at contrasting psychological risk factors and reinforcing psychological protective factors (e.g., cognitive reserve) to avoid dysfunctions and maladaptive behaviors.
Action-research models will be addressed at enhancing the epigenetic factors of elderly, and at fostering the empowerment of families and caregivers.
The effectiveness of interventions will be evaluated, using a multidisciplinary approach integrating different professionals and procedures, and assessing the usefulness of technologies based on Artificial Intelligence.
