In the first part of this presentation the author will attempt to define and explore issues around transcultural counseling from historical, academic and professional aspects. It will present a short account of the development of transcultural counseling over the past 50 years, especially considering the vast diasporas that have delineated the migratory social upheavals in Europe and elsewhere.
In the second part of the presentation the author will explore the experiment by two universities (the University of Malta and the University of Maryland at College Park) to plan, organize and deliver a course in transcultural counseling delivered by lecturers and students coming from diverse ethnic and academic situations. It will analyse the similarities and differences encountered with special attention to the ethical issues that were created.
