Abstract text:
Much of contemporary concepts of subjective wellbeing psychology are developed in WEIRD nations. As such, modern measurements of wellbeing may ignore culturally significant aspects of personal values that may also be closely influenced by non-WEIRD nation cultural practices in the community within which the individual lives. This presentation discusses common themes pertaining to cultural practices that are purported to enhance well-being in Malaysia as an attempt to highlight the importance of diversity in cultural narratives towards the understanding subjective wellbeing in a multicultural society such as the Malaysian population. This presentation will provide some nuances of the complexities of Malaysian inter-ethnic relations and multidimensional factors that affect wellbeing that could be seen as unique to the Malaysian population. Points will be drawn from existing literature and the author's personal experiences as a person of ethnic minority.
