Abstract text:
As a Black woman socialized in the United States, I liken navigating predominantly white professional spaces to whispering my way through a forest with the pervasive fog of white supremacy distorting my reality. This visual distortion often resulted in the muting of my voice during adverse racial incidents and internalizing false beliefs, which, over time, contributed to my walking in fear instead of sovereignty. After years of blindly struggling to traverse this forest, I am excited that the fog is beginning to dissipate. I am reclaiming the truth of who I am, whose I am, and how I may utilize my voice to assist others in reclaiming their self-determination and sovereignty. Hence, my symposium contribution includes personal accounts of my evolution toward confidently utilizing my voice in predominantly white professional spaces and highlights the benefits of engaging in difficult conversations and the consequences of remaining silent.
