Abstract text:
This presentation will share how home visitors in Maine in the United States were instructed by a rural practitioner and faculty educator on how to conduct a mental health screening to assess the physical, emotional, and social well-being of pregnant and postpartum individuals. The session will cover how to use screening tools, as well as observation and skilled conversation, to collect relevant health information, recognize potential risks, identify when families may need additional support, and consider strategies for discussing concerns with families. Key considerations such as family medical and mental health history, current symptoms, nutrition, safety, and access to care were discussed. The training highlighted respectful and responsive communication, consideration of different life experiences and personal beliefs. It aimed to equip home visitors with the skills to promote healthy pregnancies, support postpartum recovery, and connect families with appropriate resources and services. Emphasis was placed on ensuring adequate personal self-care for home visitors.
