Introduction
Malaysia transforming its approach to athlete welfare, demonstrating a heightened commitment to fostering a safe sport environment. This is reflected through multi-stakeholder initiatives and a growing culture of awareness.
Purpose
This presentation will discuss Malaysia's evolving safe sport landscape, focusing on the critical psychological dimensions of athlete abuse and its prevention. Psychological consequences of mistreatment and explore recent policy efforts will be also highlighted.
Method
A psychological perspective will be adopted to analyze Malaysia's safe sport movement. The presentation will examine the psychological consequences of abuse, using high-profile cases for illustration. This will be followed by a detailed analysis of the Safe Sport Code which was introduced in 2023. The Code's intended impact on psychological safety will be evaluated and its legal and psychological limitations examined.
Results
Although the Safe Sport Code is a positive step, its effectiveness is hindered by a lack of legal enforceability. This limitation can perpetuate a sense of vulnerability among athletes. This finding underscores the need for a more comprehensive approach with stronger legal safeguards to foster a mentally healthy sports community.
Conclusions
In conclusion, the Safe Sport Code is a commendable starting point, but not a definitive solution. To create a culture of safety and accountability, we must advocate for a more robust, legally enforceable framework. This is crucial for protecting athlete psychological well-being. Moving forward, we suggest key actions like legislative reforms and educational campaigns to create a sporting environment where every athlete feels secure, respected, and empowered.
