Supporting trainees encountering challenges to achieving developmental milestones in clinical training is a near-universal experience for training directors and clinical supervisors (Schwartz-Mette et al., 2023). These situations produce high levels of stress for all individuals involved—trainees, trainers, and administrators alike—with potential repercussions for clients receiving services. Further, the situations are rife with relational, ethical, and potentially legal challenges impacting multiple levels of a training-focused organizational system. Schwartz-Mette et al. (2023) have described these situations as trainees with problems of professional competence (TPPC). In this session, we will explore guidelines and discuss strategies to address TPPC from multiple perspectives, relational, ethical, and legal. Individuals involved in clinical training will be encouraged to engage in their own self-reflection and self-assessment with respect to addressing TPPC. Pertinent ethical and legal issues regarding TPPC will be discussed in the competence of maintaining and preserving professional relationships while being cognizant of the gate-keeping responsibility of trainers. Finally, we will apply the guidelines and strategies for addressing TPPC with case vignettes. Applications to practicum, internship, and postdoctoral training will be discussed.
